Who We Are
The history of Gujarat’s Patidar community is illustrious. Originally Kurmi Kshatriyas from the rugged regions of Punjab–Haryana, after invasions by foreign powers they settled in the Bundi–Kota region of Rajasthan. Adopting agriculture as their livelihood, they came to be known as “Kurmi Patidar.” As the desert region was unfavorable, they moved onward toward North Gujarat.
Settling on the banks of the Saraswati River, they established a temple to Goddess Umiya—worshiped in Punjab—and revered her as their Kuldevi (clan deity). That place is known today as Unjha. Among Patidars, two branches are recognized: “Kadva” and “Leuva.” The word “Kurmi” evolved into “Kanbi,” and they came to be known as “Patel.”
Within the Kadva Patidars, the Bhimani family holds a distinct place. In Samvat 615, Joitram Bapa settled in Bandhanaj village of Vijapur district. His descendants—the sons of Venidas Bapa, Bhimji and Parbat Bapa—settled in Sihor of Saurashtra. From there began the “Bhimani” and “Parvadiya” families. Both share the “Rusat” gotra, therefore marriage between them is not permitted.
The Bhimani family later settled in Chakampar, Mandal, and then Hadiyana. Even today in Hadiyana, the memorial stones (paliyas) of Gopal Bapa and Sati Ma Liluma stand as a living legacy. Through agriculture, devotion, and valor, this family has earned its place in the history of Gujarat.
